Overcoming Ike

  • Sep 25, 2009

Introduction

In February of 2009, Island Church completed its 7th year of ministry on Galveston Island. During this span of time, the church has grown from a small group that met at Pastors Rusty and Leah Martin’s home to the current crowd that gathers three times a week at 2411 69th Street. Through the years, Island Church has overcome many obstacles and they thank God for getting them through each one.

Overcoming the Storm:

Early September 2008 was a special time. Island Church had been in their new facility for 18 months, and their crowds were maximizing the 2,000 square foot building. All ministries, including children’s ministry, Continuing Bible Education Class, and outreach program, were going strong.

After Hurricane Ike hit, the members at Island Church were surprised by the news that Island Church had over four feet of water, and many member’s homes had been damaged as well. All of the church’s carpet, chairs, sound system, and furniture in the ministry and nursery were destroyed, as well as all computers, desks and copiers.

In the midst of the natural disaster, the members at Island Church made the decision to believe God, trust His Word, and exercise their Faith for a miracle.

After reestablishing their services and starting the long and expensive process of reconstruction, Island Church’s phones began to ring, with pastors and friends from all over the world offering their financial and spiritual support.

Island Church now has restored all damages, including everything from new walls to new computers, and are ready for a new start.

Ministries:

Services are upbeat with dynamic praise and worship. Many songs used in the services are written by members of the praise team. The teaching and preaching is applicable and practical as Pastor Rusty draws on 23 years of world-wide ministry experience.

The ministries of the church continue to grow and offer services to those of different backgrounds and walks of life. Island Church is the place for fun and activities! Each Wednesday in June, they host Beach Bible School, where kids are taught the gospel, surfing and beach safety. The 4th of July picnic is a highlight of the summer, the Easter egg hunt is a family favorite and the Christmas banquet lights up the holiday season.

International Vision:

In addition to ministering to those within the Galveston area, Island Church also has an international vision that involves ministry support to Cuba, Nicaragua, China, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Botswana and Oahu, Hawaii. The church not only lends its financial support to these distant locations but also travels on a regular basis to preach the gospel to these places.

Come and be blessed.
